Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hello! I was diagnosed with ganglion cysts in both knees. the ortho. surgeon that I saw in D.C. didn t recommend surgery. I had MRI that he viewed and they were large. It started when I moved to a third floor apt. 7 months before I saw him in Feb. I read where stairs can cause them. I am a teacher 59- fibromyalgia- asthma- but other than that, ok. I wear a brace on my right leg every day but now left is getting worse. Right is bothering me again a great deal. Should I seek an ortho. closer to home to give me some kind of treatment? Is there a treatment other than surgery.
Ganglion cysts are fluid filled sacs formed over joints or tendons(tissue which connects the muscle to the bone. They are non cancerous and not at all dangerous, however, they may cause discomfort to the joint. It can be treated by drainage of the fluid however there is a high chance of recurrence after it is drained. The definitive treatment of it is surgical removal. It can be done under local or spinal if the cysts are big. In my opinion you should get it removed surgically as its the definitive treatment. Meanwhile, you can continue to use the braces if it helps you.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Anoop Kumar, General & Family Physician
