What Does The MRI Report Indicate?

Hi. I recently had an MRI done for numbnessand ttingling inmy feet and legs, as well as mild lower pack pain/ppressure. The MRI report says At L5-S1 -disc degeneration and desiccation with mild broad disc annularbulging and protrusion . I understand basically what it says....a bulging disc. Would this be causing the numbness and tingling I am feeling? (I also got blood work done with multiple tests to make sure it isn taanything else, and they are all finel. I will note....I am a paramedic/Firefighter and have been lifting heavy stuff on a regular basis for 11 yyears.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Spine is made of bony vertebrae and intervertebral discs with spinal cord, vascular structures and connective tissues. Intervertebral structures are the structures between the vertebral bodies which play major role in movements of the spine. Spinal cord is the neural tissue continues from the brain forms spinal nerves at different levels to supply the periphery. The spinal nerves exit the spinal canal through intervertebral foramina which is in close proximity to the disc. During various disc abnormalities, these nerves may get suffered from mild pressure effect to severe nerve compression causing radiating pain.

Degeneration and dessication means the disc is dehydrated and loss its normal connective tissue strength which cannot sustain the pressure effects during normal activities that are normally tolerated. Appropriate diet and plenty of water may help very much to cure the pathology. Numbness and tingling sensation are symptoms of the early stages of nerve compression. Proper diet and stress reduction are necessary for cure. Physiotherapy and strengthening exercises are also advised.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
