Hello Doctor. My mother is undergoing treatment for spinal TB by taking ATDs and Neurocysticercosis. As per doctors directions, we conduct an LFT test every two weeks. Today we got an LFT done. Her SGOT is at 100 U/L and SGPT is at 115 U/L. The normal range is 0-46 and 0-49 for SGOT and SGPT respectively. Her Bilirubin is 0.8 mg/dl, conjugated being 0.30 mg/dl and unconjgated being 0.50mg/dl. her Alkaline Phosphatase is 245 U/L the normal range being 64-306. her GGT is 190 U/L. Her ESR is 21mm which was at 72 when she had started off with ATDs;and haemoglobin is 13.5 gm%. Need your opnion on her report. Whether it is all normal, etc? She is feeling the improvement in her back pain. Need to know why her SGOT and SGPT is high. Thank you, doctor.
Brief answer : Can be considered normal.. Detailed answer: Hello there. Welcome to healthcaremagic. Everything is normal except increased SGOT,SGPT and GGT.But this transient increase is acceptable up to certain extent while on therapy especially with chemotherapy with anti tubercular drugs and neurocysticercosis treatment. After initiation of therapy, liver cells may get injured transiently and release its intracellular enzymes(SGPT,SGOT,GGT) into the blood. But the liver gradually adapts over time and the enzyme levels may remain in either acceptable limits or return even to normal with better dosing. Also there are no clinical correlations to give much importance to this LFT report.Continue monitoring of LFT as suggested by her treating doctor and watch for any signs like jaundice, right sided abdominal pain etc. Hope this answers your query. If any concerns, don't hesitate to ask.Take care.
