What Does The Clear Orange Fluid Drawn From The Lungs Indicate?

My mother had fluid drawn from her lungs today, and the nurse said it was orange clear. Can you give me some idea of what that means? She is 89 and in failing health, so I m not going to be upset, regardless of the answer, good or bad. I m prepared for whatever, even if the answer is, it could be almost anything.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my surgical experience, the clear orange fluid drawn from lungs may indicate possible different conditions as

- Pneumonic aspirate with blood tinge giving orange color
- Malignancy related effusion
- Others

* I recommend to undertake cytology report of the fluid for best evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
