What Does The Following CT Scan Report Suggest?

What does it mean when a CT scan shows moderate to severe diffuse symmetrical cerebral volume loss? What are the symptoms associated with volume loss? I am caring for a resident that has been diagnosed with NPH about a year ago, but has had intractable nausea and vomiting for the last six weeks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Diffuse cerebral volume loss is a sign of cerebral atrophy. It is very commonly seen with old age and is a generalised physiological effect of aging.
In your patients case it seems to be due to Normal pressure hydrocephalus.

it's also seen in neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, ischaemic injury to brain, normal pressure hydrocephalus.

Symptoms of cerebral atrophy are mostly the manifestation of the underlying cause like convulsions and paralysis will be seen in case of ischaemic brain injury, tremors in Parkinson's disease, memory loss in case of Alzheimer's disease.
in case of NPH The symptoms include -
-Abnormal gait
-urinary incontinence
-dementia
-headache
-nausea

Hope this answers your question. thank you.
