What Does The Following CT Scan Results Mean?

Hi, My husband just had a CT scan and the results are as follows; Poorly delineated mass anterior segment left upper lobe extending into the anterior mediastinum and posteriorly towards the left hilum. Rule out neoplasm. Can you please tell me in plain terms what does this mean?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It means that there is something at the upper lobe of the lung that extends beyond the lung that should not be there. It can be some sort of infection or a tumor, which can be malignant or benign. The next step would typically be a bronchoscopy and/or needle biopsy.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
