What Does The Following MRI Report Indicate?

My friend Sudhakar Gundeli is suffering from paralysis. New M R I says as below Areas of gliosis r seen in the left occipital lobe and in the left posterior pariatal Parafacine region secondary to previous infarcts. Smaller areas of gliosis are also seen in left half of medulla and in the left infereior cerebellar peduncle. This is also secondary to previous infarcts,Mild ventriculomegaly of bilateral lateral ventricles noted with periventricular csf ooze. No significant abnormality in the MRI angiogram of cerebral and carotid arteries.Polypoidal mucosal thickening is seen in left maxillary left frontal and left ethmoid sinuses extending to left half of nasal cavity and in the nasopharynx s/o chronic sinusitis with antro naso-coanal polyposis.

When a person experiences a stroke, blood supply to a portion of brain decreases drastically or shuts off completely. Sometimes that results in death of nerve cells in that region. This cell death is called infarction. Body tries to repair that area with some "packing material" called glial tissue. So this repair is called gliosis. It seems your friend has suffered multiple strokes in the past and consequently he has multiple areas of gliosis. This may explain is paralysis especially if it involves right side of his body. Dilated ventricles can happen with age as brain matter starts shrinking or may happen with stroke for similar reasons. A periventricular ooze may indicate high pressure inside the brain and this needs to be looked at by a neurologist. Mucosal polyp is pretty common and most of the time is benign. If there are troublesome symptoms of nasal blockage, bleeding, headache or sneezing, you may visit an ENT specialist.
