Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
MRI shows L5-S1 right foramina annular fissure without protrusion or neural impingement. Disc height is normal. Small midline L1-2 protrusion without neural improvement/ stenosis. Other lumbar levels are within normal limits. I ve had severe back pain for the last 4 months. It is difficult to sit for long periods, even something as simple as sitting for dinner. I have completed physical therapy for 6 weeks per physicians orders with no relief. Had a steroid injection a few weeks ago and no change. Are there any other conservative options for treatment? I ve been told once you have one back sugary, you will ultimately have others down the road. I would like to try other non-surgical options.
Annular ligament is a thought covering which holds the softer disc material contained in itself. A tear in the annular ligament is referred to as a fissure. It can happem after lifting heavy weights or other such sudden undue stresses on back. Its similar to puncturing a tyre. But the good thing about your MRI report is, though there is fissure there is no diac bulge at L5S1 with normal disc height. The L1L2 disc should not bother you as the disc is small. I would suggest you to have patience with your back Surgery is definitely not the option for you with this MRI. You should avoid bending forwards, lifting any kind of weights, squating , sitting in floor or any other activity which you feel aggravated your pain. PT, Back strengthening exercises, accupunture.
Hope this helps.
All the best.Regards.
