What Does The Following X-ray Report Suggest?

I just checked my chest xray and got this diagnosis. Discussion: Normal heart size. Unchanged minimal atelectasis or scarring at the left base. No airspace opacification or pleural effusion identified. Cervical-thoracic plate and screws. Impression: No evidence of acute cardiopulmonary disease. Primary Diagnostic Code: MINOR ABNORMALITY Last Friday I blacked out in front of the refridgerator after a coughing spell. Ive had this cough since Jan 1 my DR gave me a zpak in Jan 25th but didn t help much. Going back in a week. Still coughing but not bring much up only in AM. I smoke 5-10 cig a day gut never more than 1 pack in 30 yrs.

Hello,

The only abnormal finding in your chest X-ray is the presence of "atelectasis or scarring". This is not a diagnostic finding. Atelectasis means that a part of the lung cannot fully expand. There are various potential causes for that like a past inflammation (pneumonia) in this area for example. I cannot just guess why this atelectasis is there. If your doctor does not have a good answer for this and it's been only recently present then a CT scan of the chest might be necessary. If the atelectasis has been first noted many years ago then there are no concerns for serious active disorders (tumors and the like.)

Besides that, your current problem (an infection probably as your doctor prescribed an antibiotic) does not involve the lungs - there is no pneumonia.
