What Does The Following Lipid Profile Report Indicate?

I recently had an echo-cardiagram showing no problems. However, lipid profile results show total cholesterol 300, triglycerides210 and LDL 190. I am an energetic 75 year old who exercises and am about 20lbs. overweight. My cardiologist took me off statin drug due to muscle tears . What options do you suggest?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Based on the results of lipid profile, you have mixed hyperlipidemia (increased cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides).

Since you can not tolerate Statins, the other alternate effective but safer medications to reduce your high lipids include the following:

1. Bile-acid-binding resins like Cholestyramine or Colestipol: These are drugs that get the liver to make more bile acids. These then reduce the cholesterol in your blood.
2. Nicotinic acid.
3. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

Beside you also need to have some life style changes such as:

Lifestyle changes
For many people, lifestyle changes alone can help reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

1. A low-fat diet can lessen your risk of heart disease.
2. Reducing sugar and carbohydrates intake is effective in lowering both your weight and triglycerides while increasing HDL (good fat).
3. Stop smoking and alcohol consumption
4. Lose weight: If necessary, see a dietician for help selecting a healthy diet or join a weight-loss group like Weight Watchers.
5. Physical exercise; a recommended goal is at least 30 minutes of exercise per day, even if it's split into 10-minute segments. Find something that you like to do. It could be walking, swimming, biking, dancing, a gym workout, or something else. The most important thing is to find a routine that you'll stick to.
6. Keep to a healthy diet: Limit fast foods and maximize fresh foods.
7. Incorporate more fish (which contains omega-3 fatty acids) in your diet.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.

A feedback is appreciated.
