I don t know how to spell it but my doctor wants me to see a hemotoligist / oncology doctor for my platelets dropped to 80,000 .I just got an appointment and I asked the nurse what I was being checked for and she said thrombo psycho penia I believe . Can you expand on this ? YYYY@YYYY .

Normally platelets ranges from 150,000 to 450,000 per microliter of circulating blood. Thrombocytopenia can be inherited or it may be caused by a number of medications or conditions. Whatever the cause, circulating platelets are reduced by one or more of the following processes: trapping of platelets in the spleen, decreased platelet production or increased destruction of platelets. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) can impair platelet function.
