my ultrasound report shows that in the right ovary there is a 2.3x1.4x2.4 cm anechoic cyst identified. Will that be a chocolate cyst? Also, there are punctuate echogenic foci within parenchyma of bilateral ovaries, compatible with small calcifications. They are likely dystrophic in nature. Does that mean my ovary condition is getting worse and might have difficulty getting pregnant?
Calcification in ovary is usually dystrophic in nature, forming secondary to degeneration of the epithelium or in association with areas of necrosis. It may occur in cases of endometriosis, old chocolate cysts or any other cysts and tumor like condition. The dystrophic calcifications in you can be due to previous cysts in the ovaries which have resolved with time.
The 2.3 x 1.4 x 2.4 cyst is anechcoic and this means it is containing clear fluid. A chocolate cyst is rarely anechoic but if you had chocolate cysts in the ovaries earlier then this can cause dystrophic calcifications in the ovaries.
Such calcifications and cysts do not always impact fertility. However, if you have such problems then medications can be tried for sometime and fertility is restored in many patients.
