What Does The Following Urinalysis Test Report Indicate?

My urinanalysis test shows that there are ketones 20 (1+) mg/dL in my urine, but negative for glucose. My blood test shows that my Hemoglobin A1C is 5.3% with a normal range of 4-5%. HGB is 14 g/dL with a normal range of 12-16. Is this indicative of pre-diabetes?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
The urinanalysis report what you have furnished does not indicate pre-diabetes.
The following inferences can be made based on the urinanalysis report you have furnished.
1. Glucose should be negative and it indicates that glucose is not excreted in urine, commonly in consitions like diabetes mellitus.
2. Hemoglobin A1c of 5.3% is well within normal limits, which rules out having diabetes mellitus.
3. Hemoglobin level with 14 g/dl indicates normal and you are not anaemic.
4. Urine ketones 20 (1+) indicates that ketone bodies are positive. It may indicate to be positive due to starvation, following alcohol intake, dehydration, certain medications like Levodopa and Vitamin C.
Such results needs to be correlated clinically.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
