What Does This GGT Level Of 385 Indicate?

My husband is a beer drinker about 6 12oz daily. He went for a blood test and it came back ggt 385. The doctor said he had alcoholic cirrhosis of liver without ascites. He didn t give him a referral to a specialist. Can you explain what a ggt of 385 means and what is our next plan??? never mind if I had 15 dollars which I don t I would continue this. The doctor copays and eye surgery has been over 500 dollars this month.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
GGT level with 385 is more than 6 times higher than normal. It is mainly increased in alcoholic liver disease. It is an inducible enzyme which gets elevated in chronic alcoholics. Based on the history, it is very much evident that your husband liver function has been badly damaged and gone in to the stage of cirrhosis (fibrosis). Conservative line of management may be tried by use of medications, but might not be that useful in the long run. He may probably need to undergo liver transplant at some stage during the course of treatment.
Kindly consult Gastroenterologist with the report for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
