Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my LMP is 25 March, I am about 4-5 weeks pregnant, it is unplanned, I am 44 years old. Yesterday I had HCG beta bloods taken and my results came back at 8937. I understand that is incredibly high. I will go for repeat bloods tomorrow (48 hours) however should I also go for an early pregnancy scan? I have read about molar and ectopic pregnancies. Thank you
The values of Beta HCG are very much variable in pregnancy. There is a wide range for this value during pregnancy any time. For example in pregnancy of 6 weeks, the normal HCG Level may range up to 21000 mIU / ml. However, this is more specific that it should usually double after every 48-72 hours during the first trimester. Therefore, you are right in going for a repeat blood test, after 48 hours.
Also, early pregnancy test is likely to be positive in all probabilities in your case, as it is generally positive in urine with Beta HCG value of 50 or higher in blood. Though in molar pregnancy generally HCG level is >100000, still in some cases of molar pregnancy, the levels may be normal. Therefore ultrasound is a more helpful entity to diagnose a molar or ectopic pregnancy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
