I had a hida scan and it was noted that there was extrahepatic uptake what does that mean? My exjection rate was 91% and it was done with cck and it recreated the pain and some of the nausea I feel, from what I am reading there is no clear cut answer that I would benefit from having it removed.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
A HIDA (hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid) scan is a diagnostic test that uses a radioactive tracer to assess the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder function. The extrahepatic uptake noted in the report means that the tracer has accumulated outside the liver, which may indicate a blockage or obstruction in the bile ducts.
An ejection rate of 91% is considered normal, indicating that the gallbladder is functioning well. The administration of CCK (cholecystokinin) during the scan may have triggered symptoms like pain and nausea, which is not uncommon. Whether or not removing the gallbladder would be beneficial depends on the underlying cause of the symptoms, and further evaluation and consultation with a medical professional are recommended.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
