What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

I have severe pain in my back, left leg and foot. I have been told it is syatic nerve problem. I have had an MRI and the result indicates significant left-sided neural foraminal narrowing and touches the exiting left L4 nerve root., causing moderate to severe left-sided neural foraminal causing stenosis. I understand the causes of this but am told there is no way aside from a nasty operation of curing this problem
