What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

Hi, I received an MRI last week and the findings were all normal except 8 mm nonenhancing septated multicystic structure inseparable from the lateral margin of the frontal horn of the left lateral ventricle. This most likely represents a benign etiology such as a coarctation of the frontal horn of the lateral ventricle or neuroepithelial cyst or prominent perivascular space, less likely sequela of old infection or much less likely a low-grade cystic mass. If clinically indicated consider future follow-up to evaluate for expected stability scared. What should I do? What does this mean? Please help

Hello,

For the moment I don't think you should do anything. The finding is not something new, it's something which is most likely born or a remnant of an old infection, something which you have had all your life, is not active, doesn't cause any symptoms and has been found by coincidence.

For safety purpose it advises to have repeat follow up MRIs in the future to make sure it has remained the same and not grown which would raise the possibility of a cystic mass, a tumor containing mostly fluid, a possibility the report considers very unlikely though.

Of course, you should discuss the result with the doctor who prescribed the MRI, you don't say anything on your symptoms, why you had the MRI. We take decisions based on history, physical findings, and test reports, not by tests alone. But if I was to judge based on this report alone I would say simply go ahead with your normal life, it is a non-significant finding and advises only a repeat MRI in 6 -12 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
Neurologist
