Hello,
Myelomalacia of the spine is a medical condition that occurs when the
spinal cord begins to soften. Causes are:
Athletic trauma
Falls
Car accidents
Old age due to degenerative changes in spinal cord
When the spinal cord doesn’t get enough blood supply and the spinal cord begins to soften, it can lead to a number of issues inside the body, including:
Pain
Muscle weakness
Motor function impairment
Delayed or inhibited reflexes
Difficulty breathing
The main stay of treatment is surgical. The goals of myelomalacia surgery are:
1) To clear the blockage or compression that is inhibiting normal blood flow
2) To stabilize the area so that the problem doesn’t return in the future
The prognosis depends upon
3) Patients can typically leave the surgery center on the same day
4) Jumping back into full activities can cause problems with the surgery, and limited activities are typically advised for 4-6 weeks
The prognosis is a bit guarded but depends upon the level of involvement, cause, age of the patient etc.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
