Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
An MRI of my knee has shown that I have a late stage non-displaced osteonecrosis or subarticular bony fracture at the weight-bearing portion of the medial femoral condyle. My doctor is sending me to an orthopedic specialist but in the meantime I would like to know how this will be treated?
Osteonecrosis is a painful bone condition which becomes worse over time and may affect someone's mobility. After assessing you physically, your doctor will decide what type of treatment do you need. Treatment usually depends on the amount of damage to the bones. If the bone damage is limited to smaller bone, then applying cold compresses or hot compresses, taking rest, taking NSAIDS or non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, using walking aids etc may help to ease joint pain and gradually increase the range of motion. But, in most cases surgery will be necessary to treat avascular necrosis. Core decompression and joint replacement are the surgical options.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician,
