General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Though the white blood cell count would normally go up in response to infection, in some cases, particularly with viral infections, there can be a decrease instead of an increase. The cold/flu is due to a viral illness and this can therefore sometimes be associated with a decrease in the white cell count. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell, the blood test may have also listed lymphocyte, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. These are all types of white blood cells.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
