Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is just 22 years old, we live in Canada.. He went to hospital one day complainning about chest pressure , and they took an X ray and it came with a diagnostic that surprised me a lot : The left clavicular head demonstrates cortical irregularity, underlyining increased sclerosis and erosions, with widenning of the left SC joint. Now the doctors asked a Triphasic Bone Scan and a CT: Ext/Upper/Lt/C As a mother (and nurse) I am feeling sad and confused.. why all of this??
There is increased calcium deposition in the inner end of the collar bone on the left side. This is a finding which can be seen in many conditions. The commonest is after any trauma which he might have had many years back. The other possibility is any arthritis or metabolic condition.
Tumors can cause such findings but less commonly. The bone scan is required to know the type of activity and if there is increased metabolism in the area. The triphasic bone scan will also help to know if similar areas exist else where and will help in making a diagnosis. In most cases such a finding is rare however the CT scan is also important to know if there are any soft tissue components which might be causing symptoms. Please do not worry.
