A 13 years old male presents with accidental discovery of leucopenia in his CBC. WBC: 3.1 with lymphocytosis: Lymphocytes 59% and neutrophils 26%. HGB: 11gm/dl. He has no lymphadenopathy and no recurrent infections. CBC was repeated after one month and same results were obtained. How to proceed in this case?
Lypphocytes are increased and neutrophils are decreased. The cause may be infection, hypersplenism, malignancy such as leukemia, drugs, megaloblastosis such as vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency, or primary netropenia. Is your son taking any medicine?? The major risk of neutropenia is microbial infection. the cause needs to be identified. Advice 1. Consult a hematologist for diagnosis and management 2. Investigation a. Bone marrow examination b. Blood culture c. ESR d. Peripheral smear of blood Thanks
