Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Hello, I recently had blood work done and had the strange results of high d. bilirubin (direct bilirubin, I presume) and normal total bilirubin. My results for the whole hepatic panels are as follows: Total bilirubin 1.50 mg/dl D. bilirubin 0.8 mg/dl Total protein 7.3 ALT (SGPT) 41 ALK PHOS 104 AST (SGOT) 43 ALBUMIN 4.6 Kindly advices me
I can understand your concern and would try to help you in the best possible way. The report indicated suggest elevated direct bilirubin with near normal other parameters. Direct bilirubin elevation suggests that liver is producing bilirubin fine and conjugation it good but it is not being excreted with bile. It happens in any obstruction of bile duct by stones or any other cause.
So it becomes important to rule out these conditions. It can be done by ultrasonography of abdomen. You may consult your doctor and plan for the test. If USG is norma then there is no cause to worry as elevated direct bilirubin could be a normal findings in a few patients.
