What Does This Brain MRA Report Indicate?

I had an MRA of the brain without contrast done. The findings were as follows:The distal vertebral and basilar arteries are patent. The distal internal carotid arteries are unremarkable.. The anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries are patent. The right posterior cerebral artery arises from the distal right internal carotid artery. There is a dominant left posterior cerebral artery. There is a small vessel arising from the very distal basilar artery on the right. There is prominence to the origin of this vessel which appears to represent the are identified on the previous study. What do you think this means?

Hello!

Welcome and thank your for asking on HCM!

I read your question carefully and explain that the findings in your brain MRI are just normal variations of the vessels structure inside the brain.

There is nothing to worry about. Usually the posterior cerebral arteries and basilar arteries are connected through the posterior communicating arteries.

In some cases (like yours) this does not happen. But all these variations are normal and happen in many individuals.

The small vessel, which arises from the distal basilary artery may be just a normal variation of the perforants artery which feed the brainstem.

Have you any symptoms? Why have you performed a brain MRI?

It is important to evaluate this images in relation with your clinics, to find out possible implications of this physiological vessel variation in possible symptomatology.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best regards,

Dr. Iliri
