Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does This Cervical Spine MRI Scan Finding Indicate?
I had an MRI of the Cervical Spine without contrast. The results show: C5-C6 Circumferential disc osteophyte complex with mild compression of the anterior spinal cord. No abnormal cord signal. Bilateral facet and uncovertebral joint hypertrophy with moderate bilateral formal narrowing. Mr Dr. recommended Anterior Cervical Fusion C5-6. I am afraid to have that surgery.
Findings suggests mild degenerative changes in cervical spine. Degenerative changes are generally age related findings. It is due to chronic stress on annulus fibrosis.
At C5-6 level, there is small disc osteophyte complex which is causing mild compression on anterior spinal cord. There is no central canal stenosis. There is also facet hypertrophy(bony joint in between two vertebra) which is causing moderate narrowing of bilateral neural foramen.
Majority of degenerative disc disease patients are benefited by conservative treatment in the form of physiotherapy, analgesics and muscle relaxants. Surgery is advised in non responding cases. Physiotherapy helps in strengthening of paraspinal muscles and it prevents further changes.
In your findings,I suggest for physiotherapy first.Surgery should be the last option.
Get well soon. Take Care Dr.Indu Bhushan
