Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, I had been feeling weird for a few months and finally went to have a physical. I am reading my lab reports and 9 test came back abnormal. My HDL Cholesterol is 42, Glucose is 147, ALT is 33 and Hemoglobin A1C is 7.5. I have a few more abnormal ones but what do the few I listed mean?
Hello and thank you for your question. Your HDL is a little low. This is the good cholesterol and needs to be higher. Exercise is a great way to increase HDL. Your ALT is a liver test and is so close to normal it is of no concern. Your sugar is high. The hemoglobin A1c is a measure of how your sugar has been doing over the last 3 months and it is high. You have diabetes and need to learn about that disorder and increase your exercise and decrease carbohydrates in your diet. A good A1c for a patient with diabetes is less than 7. Regards

General & Family Physician, Dr. Saad Aziz's Response
Hi, Thank you for contacting HCM. I have reviewed your Lab. reports. Your HDL Cholesterol is lower than it is supposed to be. HDL is the good cholesterol and you can raise the HDL levels by Including food such as fish and cod liver oil in your daily diet. I assume that the glucose value you have provided is your Fasting glucose level which is taken early in the morning before breakfast. If so, then it is raised and is suggestive of diabetes mellitus when combined with your HbA1c which is also raised and is suggestive of high blood glucose levels for the past 3 months. Your ALT is within the normal range suggesting normal liver function. I would suggest you consult your Endocrinologist for further guidance and a treatment regimen to control your blood sugar levels.
Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. Wishing you good health.
