What Does This Thyroid Function Test Result Indicate?
My questions is in trying to interpret me hormone levels. My Thyrotropin was 0.14 two months ago and now it is 1.38 My Thyroxine, Free was 1.00 two months ago and now it is 0.81 My Triiodothyronine was 109 two months ago and now it is 84 I was on Nature Throid and I don t feel that it has worked. I am being switched to Levothyroxine. Will this medication make things better?
This is suggestive of secondary hypothyroidism. Thyroid gland is controlled by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. So, failure of the pituitary gland to secrete thyrotropin appears to be the cause of secondary hypothyroidism which is characterized by low levels of thyrotropin, thyroxine and triiodothyronine.
Levothyroxine is the most commonly used medication to treat such cases as it is better tolerated, effective, stable, lack of allergic reactions, permits once daily and easy lab measurement of serum levels. It will definitely make the things better than nature thyroid. Continue taking it as prescribed by your doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
