Hydronephrosis basically means dilatation of kidney. Prenatal ultrasound may reveal a fetus with dilated kidneys. This occurs in 1 per 100 pregnancies.
Other than USG , VCUG and Kidney scan can be done to confirm the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is confirmed , hydronephrosis is graded , from grade 0 to grade 4 (4 being most severe),
If the hydronephrosis is of less grade then it can be treated by antibiotics . Higher grade hydronephrosis requires surgery .
The vast majority of vchildren with hydronephrosis grow up healthy and lead normal lives even if they require surgery to fix an abnormality.
