What Does This Ultrasound Report Indicate?

hi i have severe pain in the back for a day . ultrasound showed - left kidney shows fullness in pelvicalyces but no stone could be seen in left renal pelvicalyes. Left ureter could not be visualised due to overlying intestinal gas and hence of left ureteric stone cannot be ruled out . is there any thing serious is going on with me

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for asking Healthcare majic.
My name is Dr Ehsan Ullah &
I have gone through your query.

Lets split your question in two parts

A). your ultrasound report shows fullness in the pelvicalyces

fullness in the pelvicalyces (upper end of the urine drainage system, for the both kidney) means there is dilatation of the portion of kidney
which collects urine

and
this happens due to obstruction of ureteropelvic junction...

because of this
there is stasis of some urine which causes
pressure effect and pain.

There is a list of causes leading to such condition
like

kidney stones especially in the ureteopelvic junction / ureter
trauma
Infections (Urinary tract infections)
Pregnancy
Enlarged prostate (Non Cancerous)
Tissue scarring (from previous surgery)
And
Lesions / mass (Tumor) which is causing such symptoms / effects

The treatment of this condition is Cause directed ...

your physician will do

your physical examination after relevant history .

will do some Labs
including

Blood (kidney function tests) and Urine analysis
and
Radiological in the form of X-rays (KUB/IVU) , Ultrasound , CT Scan (Non Contrast) & MRI.

Once the physician has searched the cause then treatment is cause directed

B) you mentioned that
Left ureter could not be visualised due to overlying intestinal gas and hence of left ureteric stone cannot be ruled out".
it simply means that your left urine tract which brings urine from kidney to the urinary bladder could not be seen due to interference of the Gas shadows in between so radiologist is not sure fully about the absence of stone in this mentioned region.

You should visit your physician which may do further work up for cause of this condition may refer you to urologist for further work up (Dependig upon your symptoms) to treat this condition timely .

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
