What Does This Ultrasound Report Mean?

my ultrasound reads : - liver normal in size and echopattern, no dilated intrahepatic billary ducts seen, but presence of solitary hepatic cyst with volume of 2.6 cc - normal gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, bladder and prostate - MINIMAL ASCITES - free fluid noted in morrisons pouch, minimal amt of peresplenic fluid I drink alcoholic drinks occasionally but on occasion heavily. Does this mean I have cirrhosis or liver disease?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all, cirrhosis is the fibrosis of the liver, a condition that will result in liver failure. Cirrhosis is mainly diagnosed by liver biopsy and can only be suspected with an ultrasound. So it is not possible to tell whether someone has cirrhosis or not from an ultrasound report. Secondly, this ultrasound report indicates that you have a problem in your fluid metabolism so the body, which is most commonly seen in either liver or kidney diseases.

Your medical provider will assess your condition with some extra tests, most commonly blood protein levels, Alpha Feto Protein, liver and kidney function tests. The 2.6 cc hepatic cyst will be considered according to your risk-profile for liver diseases and the imaging feature of the cyst. Depending on the result, your doctor might ask for a CT or decide to follow up.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
