What Does This Ultrasound Report Of Thyroid Gland Mean?

Hi I just had an ultrasound of my thyroid and the results shows: Right Lobe: 6.8x2.2x2cm Left Lobe : 6.2x2x2.1cm Both lobes of the thyroid gland are enlarged and demonstrate heterogeneity and marked increase in vascularity. No Nodular cyst or abnormal calcification is indentified. Features are consistent with a thyroiditis and given the hyperthyroid state grave s disease must be considered. Please explain in plain words. Thanks, Noreen

Hello.
Thank you for contacting HCM.

I have gone through your question and I will try to explain the findings of your ultrasound to you.
Thyroiditis is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid in which the thyroid as a whole swells up.....and as it is a swelling due to inflammation therefore the appearance becomes heterogeneous i.e thyroid tissue appears to have different kinds of tissue in between as compared to the normal homogeneous( smooth) thyroid tissue and is also associated with increased blood supply.

As mentioned in this report, you appear to have signs of hyperthyroidism that is overproduction of hormones by thyroid gland, the most possible diagnosis is of Grave's disease.

I would suggest you consult your local endocrinologist for detailed clinical evaluation, diagnostic workup and further management accordingly.

I hope this answers your question. Please feel free to contact HCM again if you have any concerns.
Wishing you good health.
