Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does This Ultrasound Result For Pain In Legs Indicate?
I am having pain in my calves, right ankle and numbness in my toes. I had surgery on 3-18-15 to remove a cancerous left kidney. Now I am having trouble when I walk or stand for too long. Also wake up in the middle of the night with numbness in the toes on my left foot. I have had ultrasound study of my legs and the bp in the left leg is slightly lower than the left arm. Right leg appears normal. Have herniated l1 s5 (?) disk. Sometimes pain in my lower back. Sometimes shooting pain in my lower back when walking.
Pain in your left foot and on and off numbness in your toes is due to the herniated disc at lumbosacral spine. These are typical symptoms of herniated disc pressing on nerve especially the sciatic nerve. Pain in the lower back is a symptom too.
Treatment options are pain relieving medications like NSAIDs ibuprofen or Naproxen twice daily for 2 weeks. To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg to be taken before food once daily. If you have any heart problems or severe peptic ulcer disease, you must avoid NSAIDs but you can have opioids in their place. Opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and Tramadol are recommended. Neuromodulators of pain like tab. Pregabalin 75 mg once daily at bed time is recommended. Physical therapy to strengthen the back muscles helps a lot in decreasing pain. You can have therapeutic ultrasound to reduce severe pain.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
