Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does This Ultrasound Test Result For Thyroid Indicate?
I was found to have a 3.5 x 1.7 x2.4. cm heterogeneous hypoechoic solid cystic mass mid to lower pole left lobe a few months ago, recently had another ultra sound the 1st finding is the same, but now found up to 0.6 cm hypoechoic oval solid mass midpole left lobe laterally that was not seen before. Had a FNA performed after the 1st ultrasound and was told it was unreadable. Not sure what to do now.
If a thyroid mass is identified and the FNA is unreadable, probably the next step would be to remove the mass surgically (lumpectomy) or sometimes to remove that side of the thyroid (lobectomy). This is the case especially if the TSH is normal (the lump is not producing extra thyroid hormone- we call it a "cold" nodus).
One in 10 "cold" nodes in the thyroid is cancer, so it is important to further investigate them till we are sure they are not cancer.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
