Hello, Thank you for your question.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a bacterial or fungal in part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. UTIs are one of the most common infections in the elderly , who can experience more severe symptoms than younger people.
Symptom in the elderly include confusion, delirium pain in the lower abdomen, flank or back pain, and poor appetite, fatigue, nausea or vomiting, fever, feeling pressure in the lower abdomen or pelvis, Urgent and frequency urination.

Your grandma history and the UA result show she has UTI. Normal WBCs in urine sediment is low 0-5 WBCs per high power field(HPF). Your grandma result is 7 so it is high, and it is normal to have 1 to 5 squamous epithelial cells per high power field in your urine.

Macrobid is indicated only for the treatment of acute uncomplicated urinay tract infection( acute cystitis)cause by Escherichia coli or staphylococcus saprophyticus. Its not indicated for the treatment of pyelonephritis or kidney abscesses(perinephric abscess). To reduce drug resistant you should do urine culture when the result show which kind of bacterial, the Antibiotic selection is more effective.

You should bring her to see your home doctor to make sure what is her real infection, that help to reduce antibiotic resistant. Your doctor may need to do ultrasound to help to guide if kidney involve or not.

I hope I answer your question.

Dr. Raksmey

Hi,

This urine report indicates urinary infection. Therefore, go for urinary cultures. If antibodies need to be escalated, do so but take a complete course. Get a CT scan of KUB to know the present status. Take plenty of fluids and water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
