What Does Throbbing Occipital Area With A Knot On Base Of Skull Indicate?

Hello, Recently I have been waking up with a throbbing sensation in my occipital area. It seems to only be notice able if I am tired. I decided to check myself out a little more and found a knot. The knot is on the left back side of the base of my skull. I hear it could range from swollen lymph nodes to cancer. Can you please help?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. A knot on the base of the skull requires attention of a doctor. You are right in your information that it could be lymph node infection, an infected cyst that was symptom-less till now and you are noticing it because it has developed symptoms. A cancer is a rare possibility so I would advise you not to think about it until you absolutely have to.

I am afraid it is really difficult to advise you regarding diagnosis and treatment here as physical examination of the swelling is the first requirement for any management.

I would advise you to visit your physician. You might have to for investigations like blood tests, x-ray, CT Scan and/or MRI for the diagnosis. Based on the test results, therapy can be initiated.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM to help you. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
