What Does Tight Sensation In The Mouth Indicate?

I have a tightness in my mouth when trying to open it. Went to my dentist. He suggested maybe a night mouth guard in case I was clenching my mouth at night. It has not helped. Went to my primary care dr. Told her the muscles in my mouth felt tight. She check eyes ear throat. Everything ok. No fever, no headaches. She gave me a week of and antibiotic. Still not helping. Now, if I take an aspirin, Tylenol or advil everything subsides and is fine for the duration of the the pill. This has been going on 3 weeks now without any other symptoms and no relief.

Hello,

Tightness in mouth when trying to open it (when you have teeth clenching habit) can be due to either muscle tightness or can be due to jaw joint related problem.

You should consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a panoramic x-ray should be done to rule out the exact cause of the problem as the jaw joints can be evaluated in it.

For now, you should start taking muscle relaxants like Chlorzoxasone and massage the side of face with round gentle movements of finger tips.

You can also do alternate warm and cool compresses. Take soft meals and avoid excessive mouth opening and avoid stress.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
