What Does Turning Of The Large Intestine Mean?

My father was just hospitalized with intestinal pain. They told him his big intestine is turned. What does this mean and is it critical. I live in another state and I need to know if I need to be with my family. The hospital does not know if they can treat it or if he needs surgery? Can you answer this for me?

General Surgeon 's  Response

The doctors would have in all probability meant that his large intestine has twisted itself, possibly due to an intestinal adhesion. It can cause intestinal obstruction, and in all probability would need surgery to correct the twisted part of the large gut, and to rectify the cause, like if it is an adhesion, this would have to be removed. It would be very good if you could be with him in this time of need, for moral and monetary support, if surgery is required. If the present hospital is not equipped to manage this condition, he needs to be shifted to a hospital where there is a gasterosurgeon.
