What Does Watery Diarrhea After Colonoscopy Indicate?

Hello ... I m a 59 year old woman and had a colonoscopy yesterday. I ve had two in the past (5 years apart) with no side effects. It is the day after and I have watery diarrhoea just like when you take the preparation. Is this normal or do I need to see my gasteronologist who performed the procedure. Don t want to panic unnecessarily.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is possible to sometimes have this reaction. It should abate on its own, usually within a few days. Unless it is very severe or you are still concerned, you do not have to consult your gastroenterologist at this time. You would need to replace the fluids and electrolytes that you are losing with the use of oral rehydration products or sport drinks such as gatorade. Probiotics, either on their own or with yogurts, would also help as well.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
