What Does Watery Stools With Positive Fecal Lacto Ferrin Mean?

3 days ago I have watery stools but no cramps or other symptoms. I tested positive for Fecal Lacto Ferrin on the quick test. Neg for C.diff and Roto virus. Stool culture to follow. I m a very healthy 37 y/o who excerises daily, rides horses and works in a microbiology lab. I was wondering if I ate something that caused me to have watery stools. I did make chicken soup from scratch and my roommate put tobasco sauce in it which I do not like to eat. I am wondering if the soup made me sick. I m also eating yougart to help with the watery stools. I m keeping hydrated and my appitite is normal. I also drink of Isopure (50G protein) after I work out and never had a problem ever. I also limit my coffee to one cup a day since I work night shift. I ve been a bit stressed lately but nothing out of normal range. I do not have IBD in my family either.

Hi there!

Thanks for posing your question on HCM!

A positive Lactoferrin test could indicate an underlying bacterial infection. For all that you know, the watery stools could just be due to the food poisoning. In which case the some satchets containing oral rehydration salts, should be taken. They will replace the electrolytes that have possible been lost through the stools.

A course of an antibiotic like tinidazole should also be included. Probiotics , in the form of granules or capsules are a healthy addition to your diet. Once your stool culture comes back, you can know more details.

If you consistently have symptoms like these, then a diagnosis of IBD should be positively ruled out. Sometimes, this condition is also seen in relatively healthier individuals too.

Hope this helps.
