What Does Yellowish Discharge From The Eyes Of A Child Indicate?

My 4 yr old grand daughter has a yellowish discharge from her eyes. We ve been staying at a lake house and been on the beach and swimming a lot. Other than it looking bad it does not seem to bother her. Should I get her to an urgent care or is there an OTC remedy I can get?

Hello.

I think your grand daughter is suffering from Bacterial Conjunctivitis.

Common symptoms of Bacterial Conjunctivitis are :

1. Yellow or green discharge or pus in the eye
2. Dried pus on the eyelids and eyelashes
3. The eyelashes are more likely to be stuck together after sleep
4. The whites of the eye may or may not be red or pink
5. The eyelids are often puffy

If you find 2 or more above mentioned symptoms in her then she immediately needs medical care.

Wish her speedy recovery.

Thanks
Dr. Tripat Mehta
