My husband, 62 was diagnosed with early alzheimers 3 years ago. He takes Namenda 10 mg 2x daily and donepezil 10mg 1x daily. Went to refill the Namenda and the prescription changed to Namenda XR 28mg. Called doctor and nurse said they don t make 10 mg anymore and to take the Namenda XR 28 mg. That is a considerable increase 20mg to 56mg daily. His appt. is in 2 weeks. Should I give him the prescribed dosage or half it until his appointment??
Hello, You have made an informed decision to question the dosage of namenda xr. You have explained that namenda 10 mg is no more available and need to take namenda xr.
Namenda xr stands for extended release tablets and is usually advised once daily. Because its once daily recommendations are to take 28 mg tablets once daily following the last night dose.
It can be taken anytime, but only once daily. I think there must have been some miscommunication and you need to increase the dosage from 20 mg to xr 28 mg. However, watch out for diarrhoea, dizziness and headache.
Hope I have answered your question. If any further questions, do ask again.
