What Effect Will Chemo Have On Heart And Valve Replacement?
My sister recently had a heart valve replacement. They then discovered several small tumors in her breast that have been removed but were cancerous. They are discussing chemo therapy. they cannot do radiation as she had extension radiation years ago for Hodgkins decease. What effect will the chemo have on her heart and valve replacement?
hello, I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM. usually some injections like Adreamycin used for cancer chemotherapy may lead to weakening of heart muscle leading to cardiomyopathy.Valve replacement is not major concern for such therapy. Before starting chemo Your treating doctor will ask for echo to check for basal function of heart. If it is normal she can safely undertake chemotherapy.Even if some findings are abnormal Your doctor will choose other medication ,So chemo therapy in case may be offered to her, My best wishes Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD
Some chemos can effect the heart like doxrubcin etc.So before starting heart fitness needs to be assessed.otherwise chemo can be given to patients with heart valve surgery.
