Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Impairs The Absorption Of Calcium In The Body Post Acid Reflux Surgery?
I have osteoporosis and have had acid reflux surgery Nissen, have taken several medications such as Fosomax, Prolia, and now Boniva. Now I read that the Calcium I take does not get absorbed because of size of stomach after reflux surgery. What are my best options.
Dear , This is Dr. S. Tomar from healthcaremagic.com's medical team and I ll be your medical adviser for this question.
Nissen fundoplication does not affect calcium absorption . Calcium absorption can get affected because of malabsorptive conditions like coeliac diasease , crohn's disease . A decreased level of vitamin D is directly related with decreased absorption also . I would recommend to get these tests done: 1. thyroid tests INCLUDING CALCITONIN 2. parathormone levels 3. blood calcium levels 4. blood Vitamin D LEVELS 5. DEXA SCAN BASED ON THESE TESTS FURTHER TREATMENT APPROACH WILL BE DECIDED FOR OSTEOPOROSIS . Based on these tests Calcium , vitamin D AND If NEEDED some other medicines will be prescribed . Here I would like to inform you that exercise is must for osteoporosis patients as it increases the mineralization and makes them strong , so exercise regularly . This is my initial response and discussion is open until you have any query or need further clarification. I wish you good health . sincerely, Dr. Shardendu Tomar
