Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Amlong (amlodipine) is a calcium channel blocker. This class of drugs is divided into two parts: dihydropyridines (the "dipines" - safe and effective in treating high blood pressure) and non-dihydropyridines (verpamil and diltiazem - safe and effective in treating high blood pressure and slowing the heart rate down by prolonging the impulse conduction through the atrio-ventricular node and through effects on the sinus node). Amlodipine is effective in treating the high blood pressure and, especially, the high systolic blood pressure. Not much side effects are reported with this drug usage, except for one: pedal oedema (swelling of the ankles) which is reported in 6% - 8% of people using it, based on reports coming from a myriad of studies. It is safe to be used for a lifetime. If the common side effect of pedal oedema should happen, lercanidipine and nitrendipine may be used instead. The latter two drugs rarely cause this side effect, but are more expensive.

I hope I was helpful with my answer.

Regards,
Dr. Meriton
