I am scheduled to have a Bronchoscopy next week with my pulmonologist. She will be doing a lavage, not a biopsy. One of the things we are looking into is the possibility of an MAI in the lung?? Could you please explain this to me? Cancer has been pretty much ruled out and though I m trying to be optimistic, I wonder!! Thank you - Sincerely, Judy
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
MAI means Mycobacterium Avium Infection. It is rare bacteria which infects lungs. It is isolated in BAL (bronchoalveolar lavage) culture. You are can also ask for sensitivity report. Culture report will isolate the causative organism and sensitivity report will guide about effective antibiotic treatment. If BAL is negative then no need to worry for MAI. Usual duration of treatment for MAI is 6-8 months.
Hope I have answered your query.
