Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is on Zoloft. She recently has a GI virus with nausea, vomiting and severe diarrhea. She was given lomotil eventually after 4-5 days of diarrhea. Since recovering from the GI virus a week ago she has been experiencing anxiety/panic attacks. She took her Zoloft during the illness. I m wondering if the Zoloft was not metabolized because of the GI illness and her serum level has dropped. Could this be the reason from the anxiety and panic attacks?
During the acute illness it is common to flare up of anxiety symptoms due to ongoing illness as it releases some metabolites which disturb the body homeostasis.
Other than that due to diarrhea it is possible that zoloft was flushed before getting into system leading to drop in concentration in body leading to anxiety/panic attacks.
having said this there is nothing to worry. Continue her routine treatment and she will be alright in couple of days or at a maximum two weeks.
Thanks and regards Dr Ashok Kumar
