What Is Myxedema?
An 85 year old female is admitted to hospital due to loss of consciousness. Her history includes myxedema. She has not been taking her thyroid medication routinely, and now she is hypotensive and hypoglycemic. What is myxedema? Myxedema is the condition resulting from severe hypothyroidism. It is also referred to the swelling of the skin and soft tissues that occurs in patients that are hypothyroid. Explain the rationale for her signs & symptoms
