What Is Oophorectomy?

Stage IV metastatic breast CA patient. Original diagnosis at 32- ER/Pr positive, node pos. mastectomy and chemo. Recurrence 10 years later with mets in lungs, diaphragm, and bones, esp. Spine, pelvis, rib cage, hips, parietal bone, femur. 5 years on tamoxifen before disease progression, 4 more on Megace until new mets to liver. At age 55, dr prescribed Femara. Failed after 9 mos. Dr. Then prescribed Faslodex. Used for 10 mos, but more new liver mets. Dr now prescribed exemestane + Affinitor , but I asked how he knew I was really post menopausal. Never tested Er levels. Blood test showed Estradiol level 70! Had oophorectomy and wanted me to use exemestane/Affinitor. I asked why not another first line AI - Arimidex? Just started that. QUESTIONS: are the other first line treatments I already took ( Femara and Faslodex) off the table for me now? Why ? Wouldn t they now work post- oophorectomy? If not, it s a real shame because they might have given me a longer time frame to look forward to. Any comments or suggestions?

Hi,

Oophorectomy is removal of one or both ovaries. A small amount of Estrogen is still made in fat cells, so generally speaking after oophorectomy Femara and Faslodex can be used.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
