What Is Recurrent Left-sided Chest Pain Upon Exercising Suggestive Of?

44 yrs old fit and well. Known asthma, been cycling for the last 12 months. Just recently been experiencing sharp inspiratory left sided chest pain below sternoclavicular joint. Only occurs when high intensity exercise and disappears within a couple of seconds, but reproducible. Chest tender sometimes and if I do a deep breath in can sometimes reproduce the discomfort at rest. No family history of heart disease, non smoker, height 173cm, weight 68kg, PEFR 620... Wondering is this costochondritis???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The pain is very unlikely to be cardiac. Pain may be caused by costochondritis or sore muscles.

If you don't feel short of breath, you can use some over the counter pain killer like Ibuprofen for a few days.

See you Dr if short of breath, severe cough, or if pain does not settle in few days.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
